Job is costing me a fortune
06/16/08 at 07:00:16

Hey. I just recently started a new job as a sales agent for a real estate paper. I have to drive from business to business asking them if they want to pay to advertise their business in our paper. This requires me to drive all day. My boyfriend put 150$ in gas in the car last week for me (no paycheck yet so he needs to pay while I wait for commission). Does anyone see this working out for me? Or should I find something better?

Steph, does the company you work for not reimburse you for gas?

So you are losing money on gas?  That should answer your question for you.

When you replied to my post about my daughter possibly changing jobs, you said your job was costing you a fortune. Well honey jobs are suppose to make you money - not cost you money. I say quit and look for something else.

I'm pretty sure that you can deduct your driving expenses on your taxes if you aren't getting reimbursed.  You should save your receipts (at least a month's worth to prove how much gas you use in a month).

Steph--this kind of a job takes time to get a customer base. So, the real question is

Do you love what you are doing?  Do you have fun doing it?

It may take 6 months to show a profit and by then you may have made enough contacts to feel secure in your job---and you will continue making more and more contacts as you go along.

It sounds like a job that would work out for a woman who wants to have children or even a second job--a flexible schedual.

It also sounds like you could sell for more than one resource one day--like a local newspaper or even magazines if you set your sights that high.

If you love it--ask God to send angels out to help people be excited to see you coming, ask God to help you to do and say the right thing all of the time. Ask God to make sales happen for you--then relax and enjoy the results. If you walk out of a door without a sale, ask God to remind them of you and your company every day.  Keep records, go back on a schedual.

I once knew a couple who owned a pharmacy and the sales were low so they asked the angels to sweep people into their doors--people would come in and say they didn't know why they stopped in--and their business grew.

There is this thing about feelings too, if there is joy in your heart the people are attracted to you--so if you love your job, people will love working with you.

If you decide you don't want to be a salesperson, that's ok too--you can use the same principals for any job, anywhere.

I am sending out the prayers of good employment to you.  Smiley

Sue, I am loosing money on gas. I can't afford it and it scares me because I am a student and I am suppose to be making money all summer and saving it for during the school year while at University.

I'm going to try this for maybe another week and then decide I think.
I am a business woman at heart (I think) because my whole dad's side of the family are all business owners (including dad) so I've grown up in that kind of environment.

Mom, I asked my guide the other day to help me find potential businesses and I found a few I had missed the previous times I'd driven on that road. I will ask for some help from them. Thanks.

Thanks for the prayer.

Steph,  I know it's not easy being a student and holding a job. Yes you need something profitable.  I think setting the deadline for yourself is a good idea.

Prime is correct about being able to claim the driving expense on your income tax,  I did this before when I had a weekend delivery job. I didn't get all of it back of course and I had to do without the money until tax time.  I ended up quiting that job because I also figured out I was losing money - and I had started the job to earn extra money to pay off some bills. It didn't work out that way.

Sue, it's a crappy job and I hate all the driving. I thought I would make tons of money. I like talking to people, especially bosses because I want to be one someday. That is my favorite part of what I do, but I don't think it's worth all the money I'm loosing Sad

hi, reading the thread I was reminded of similar times for me. It may not apply for you - but I thought I would share the story - wishing you the greatest success.

I remember one semester in college - married, broke, had to pay for school out of pocket, college town - no jobs. I was tired frustrated and was afraid I would not be able to make tuition. My last resort was the unemployment office.

I filled out piles of paper. Sat waiting in line forever. Finally got to talk to a counselor. We chatted for a few minutes - and she tilted her head to the side and said "how would you like to be an employment counselor?" I was speechless - here i am not able to find a job and you want me to counsel other people on how to find one? "How am I qualified for that?" And she said all that was required was x number of hour college credit - and I had just enough.  I wnet to the unemployment office looking for a job and found a job working for the unemployment office. It was a temporary job with the state government and saved my bacon!

You've got some college credit - check out temp jobs with the state and local government - jobs where you can help people and make a difference.
(P.S. - the job paid more than any job I had had before that)

Best wishes and prayers for your success

Raven, I JUST got a call from the local university here that they want to interview me for a summer job. It's a government funded thing I think and the best part is that I can WALK to work if I get it.

This has cheered me up tremendously.

I've had a few "jobs" like that where I was doing free work for the employer. You should let it go.
If you do HAVE to stay for awhile, make phone calls out of his office on his dime and no more driving and tell him that in plain English. He knows college students can't afford gas to be outside sales reps. C'mon, he's using you. When you're gone, he'll get calls to advertise and not give you commission.
